New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh provided a brutal update on defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey on Sunday following the team’s 13-8 loss against the Atlanta Falcons. The second-year defender needed a cart to exit the field after suffering a foot injury that Saleh called “really bad” during his post-game press conference. The head coach shared that he believes Winfrey is likely done for the season, according to Zack Rosenblatt of the Athletic.
The Jets signed Winfrey to the squad on Nov. 7 and the game against the Falcons was his first of the year. He had three tackles prior to his early exit. Cleveland originally selected Winfrey in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma.
He appeared in 13 games last season to finish with 22 tackles (one for loss) and 0.5 sacks. After he allegedly threatened a woman this summer, Cleveland released him, opening him up to the free agent market. His rookie deal was a four-year contract worth $4.47 million.
The defensive tackle was considered a draft steal coming out of OU, where he played two seasons and recorded 40 tackles (16.5 for loss), six sacks and a forced fumble. However, his Cleveland coaches were reportedly frustrated over “maturity issues” with the young defensive player in his rookie season. The allegations of threatening, on top of an assault case that was eventually dismissed, ultimately led to the two parties going their separate ways.
