Jets player draws fine for uncalled penalty on game-winning touchdown
New York Jets linebacker Chazz Surratt got away with a pretty obvious trip during Xavier Gipson's game-winning punt return on Monday night, and it helped clear the path for the game-winning touchdown against the Buffalo Bills.
Even though the officials on the field missed it, the NFL did not.
Surratt ended up getting a $4,833 fine for the trip on Buffalo tight end Quintin Morris. It is probably a fine he is very happy to pay given the result of the play.
Almost immediately the ESPN announcing crew and referee analyst John Parry called out the missed call and noted that it was a clear trip. But sometimes referees miss calls, and that was a big one to miss.
It is also worth pointing out that even if the trip had been called, the Jets would have still only needed a field goal to win the game and would have already been in field goal range — or close to it — as a result of the punt return by Gipson.
The Jets won the game, 22-16, after erasing a two-score deficit in the second half. The defense forced four Josh Allen turnovers while Zach Wilson came off the bench in relief of an injured Aaron Rodgers and did just enough to get the win.
Gipson was an undrafted free agent for the Jets that made the team with a strong preseason showing. It did not take him long to make a significant impact.
