Jets' Quarterback Swap: Rypien's Signing Sends Boyle Packing

The New York Jets have yet to declare their starting quarterback for Week 14, but it won't be Tim Boyle.

The team announced Boyle's release on Tuesday afternoon while signing quarterback Brett Rypien off the Seattle Seahawks' Practice Squad to fill the vacant roster spot. The 29-year-old Boyle started back-to-back games for New York prior to being pulled from the Week 13 loss to Atlanta after three quarters.

In sending Boyle packing, the Jets created an opportunity for a replacement that has prior experience under offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's system. Rypien played for the Denver Broncos in 2022 during Hackett's short stint as the head coach.

The Jets were reportedly interested in acquiring Rypien following Aaron Rodgers's Achilles tear, but the Los Angeles Rams blocked any potential signing by promoting the field general from their Practice Squad to the active roster on September 13. He saw game action in Weeks 8 and 9 but was subsequently released on November 7. Rypien was 18-of-38 passing for 172 yards and one interception during his half-season stay with the Rams. 

Rypien made four appearances from the 2022 Broncos, including a start against the Jets. He completed 60,2 percent of his passes for 483 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. In a 16-9 loss to New York, he went 24-of-46 passing for 225 yards with one interception. Rypien, the nephew of Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien, is 2-2 as an NFL starter.

Boyle, who signed a free-agent deal with the Green & White this past spring, was underwhelming during his short time taking the snaps. Including his fourth-quarter relief appearance against Buffalo, the journeyman was 48-of-77 passing for 360 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. He accounted for a 56.2 quarterback rating while his record as a starter dropped to 0-5.

New York's offense has struggled to find the end zone all season, managing only 10 touchdowns in 12 games. The Jets (169.3 ypg) rank 31st out of 32 teams in passing.

The Jets will host the Houston Texans on December 10 at 1:00 pm ET in East Rutherford. Head coach Robert Saleh is scheduled to address reporters at 12:30 pm ET on Wednesday, December 6.
