The New York Jets are actively seeking to enhance their quarterback position for the upcoming 2023 season.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini emphasized the need for the team to be assertive in exploring the backup quarterback market during the offseason. Cimini specifically pointed to Jacoby Brissett as a potential target, stating that the Jets have been monitoring him for some time.

Brissett notably showcased his skills in a standout performance against the Jets in Week 16, where he replaced Sam Howell and impressively completed 77% of his passes, threw for 100 yards, and secured one passing touchdown with zero interceptions.

Beyond the impressive individual statistics, Brissett played a pivotal role in orchestrating a team comeback. Taking the field with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter and the team trailing 27-7, Brissett contributed significantly to the Jets’ turnaround, culminating in a thrilling 30-28 victory secured by a last-second field goal.

Cimini expressed a sense of urgency in the Jets’ approach to the quarterback position, acknowledging that the team recognizes the missteps made in handling Zach Wilson during the previous season. With the backup quarterback market expected to be highly competitive, the Jets are keen on making strategic moves to bolster their depth at the position.

Jacoby Brissett, currently 31 years old, signed a one-year, $8 million deal in the past offseason, with $7.5 million guaranteed at signing. Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024, Brissett boasts a seasoned career, having played in 79 games over eight years, starting in 48 of them.

Throughout his career, he has demonstrated reliability and effectiveness when called upon, completing 61.3% of his passes, accumulating 10,574 passing yards, and maintaining a commendable 51 touchdown to 23 interception ratio.

The Jets have faced quarterback challenges for eight consecutive seasons since 2016, underscoring the team’s urgency to secure a reliable and skilled backup to avoid similar situations in the upcoming season.
