The New York Jets are taking aggressive steps to land a top-tier veteran quarterback this offseason. The Jets met with Derek Carr over the weekend. The meeting between Carr and the Jets was positive , but neither party was ready to come to an agreement. The Jets are keeping their options open for Aaron Rodgers.

According to Carr’s brother David, Derek plans to take his time to test the free-agency waters this offseason. The timeline might not be in the Jets' favor. They believe Carr can lead the team to a championship, but if they wait for Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers to decide on a trade package, Carr might be signed by another team by that point. The Jets would then be in trouble if a Rodgers trade fell through.

According to a report Tuesday by Dianna Russini with ESPN, the Jets will wait for Rodgers to decide if he will play in 2023. He’s expected to make that decision after his “darkness retreat.” The Jets plan to meet with the Packers about trading for Rodgers if the Packers have an interest.

That’s a big gamble for the Jets to take. It seems like they really believe they have a shot to land Rodgers next season. If they thought it was only a slight chance, it's likely they’d be more aggressive in securing Carr’s signing.
