Jim Harbaugh a 'strong candidate' for Vikings HC job

It's hard not to jump the gun after hearing Jim Harbaugh scored a second interview with the Minnesota Vikings and instantly assume he is for sure returning to the NFL stage.

If he flew to Minnesota for a second interview, that must mean they're closing in on offering him a job, right?

NFL Network's Ian Rapaport says there's no guarantee the animated Michigan coach lands the job, even though he is clearly in the mix.

"At the least, he is a strong candidate in Minnesota," Rapaport said on Wednesday. "He is one of the finalists. It is not by any stretch of the imagination a done deal."

Minnesota is reportedly still interviewing other candidates, including conducting a second interview with Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell this week. However, sources close to Harbaugh believe his chances of landing the gig are extra high.

"From Harbaugh's perspective... it sounds like he thinks there's a very good chance he gets it," Rapoport said.

One of those "sources" might as well be older brother John Harbaugh, who was asked about Jim's coaching status on Wednesday.

"If the Vikings are smart enough to get that done, then they made a very wise choice," the Baltimore Ravens head coach said.

There is already speculation as to who would take over at Ann Arbor if Harbaugh leaves the Wolverines for the Vikings. Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis is an obvious candidate, while rumors that Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule is eyeing the Michigan coaching job have picked up steam this week.

All that being said, it looks like Harbaugh is still just a "strong candidate" -- for the time being, at least.
