Joe Burrow has realistic stance on contract extension talks with Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow still has two years left on his rookie deal. Fresh off leading the Bengals to the Super Bowl, though, it would make sense for Cincy to lock up its young, star quarterback and in the process — set itself up for a bright future.

That seems to be Cincinnati's goal, and it's a worthy one. In July, team owner Mike Brown told ESPN that his "whole focus" is on keeping Burrow with the Bengals long-term. That's a lot to say about a third-year quarterback, but few players have made the impact on their franchise that Burrow has in such a short time after being taken No. 1 overall in 2020.

Recently talking to the media at Bengals' training camp, Burrow also spoke about a potential contract extension. For what it's worth, though, he doesn't seem as bullish about himself.

"It doesn't mean anything if I go in and stink it up this year," he said of the contract talks, per Charlie Goldsmith. "I'm focused on this year."

That's quite a bit of humility for one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. Quite a bit of humility for a guy who once said this before the Super Bowl:

Burrow threw for 4,614 yards and 34 touchdowns (14 interceptions) last season while leading the Bengals to their first Super Bowl appearance in over 30 years.
