Joe Namath goes scorched earth on play, future of Jets' Zach Wilson

New York Jets legend and Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath generated headlines Sunday for his takes about current Gang Green starter Zach Wilson that Namath shared during New York's 15-10 home loss to the New England Patriots.

Namath didn't hold back while discussing Wilson during a Monday appearance on the ESPN New York "The Michael Kay Show" and suggested the 24-year-old has already lost the support of at least some teammates.

"Are you telling me there aren’t some cats on the defensive side saying, 'Whoa, man, what’s wrong with you?' There’s not all harmony in the locker room," Namath explained, according to Sam Neumann of The Comeback. "And if there is, they need to get rid of the people. You have to get people in there who are competitors and want to fight to win. These guys don’t have to be in love with each other. If they’re saying they’re in love with each other, they’re BSing you and you have to get rid of them top to bottom."

On Monday morning, fellow former Jets quarterback and current "The NFL Today" analyst Boomer Esiason said during his WFAN show that current New York stars such as wide receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner likely already believe that "we can’t win with" Zach Wilson in the lineup.

The second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft was thrust into action when Aaron Rodgers went down with a torn Achilles in Week 1 and, per ESPN stats, began Monday night ranked dead last among all eligible quarterbacks with a 57.0 passer rating and a 52.4% completion percentage on the season.

Namath added on Monday that "maybe" Zach Wilson would "learn something" serving as a backup behind a proven commodity such as Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. "Broadway Joe" also made it known he's ready for the Jets to ship the perceived draft bust out of town.

"I wouldn’t keep him," Namath continued. "I’ve seen enough of Zach Wilson, alright? I’ve seen enough. He has quick feet, can throw a little bit, but I don’t believe in what’s going on up there."

Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters Monday that Zach Wilson is "our unquestioned quarterback" as the 1-2 Jets prepare to host the 2-1 Chiefs this coming Sunday night. Meanwhile, Rich Cimini of ESPN mentioned that Namath also blasted Saleh and Jets general manager Joe Douglas during Monday's interview.

"These guys aren't picking the right players," Namath said about the individuals running the Jets. "They aren't doing a good job of coaching. It's evident. I mean, you've got to look and see. If you have an eye for football at all you see things are haywire. It's too crazy. They need to fix it and that's getting rid of a lot of people and bringing new ones in."

It wasn't all that long ago when Namath was hyped his beloved Jets landed Rodgers this past spring.
