John Lynch: 49ers will 'stay patient' about possible Jimmy Garoppolo trade

The San Francisco 49ers made it clear at the start of training camp that they've moved on from veteran Jimmy Garoppolo to 2021 rookie Trey Lance as their new starting quarterback. 

Garoppolo spent the springtime months recovering from March shoulder surgery, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters ahead of this past weekend that the 30-year-old was "throwing the heck out of the ball." According to David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone, San Francisco general manager John Lynch spoke with media members via a Tuesday conference call and noted he could see Garoppolo on the practice field at that time. 

"I'm watching him throw right now, and he looks pretty good," Lynch said of Jimmy G. 

It was reported at the start of the midweek that it's unlikely the 49ers will have Garoppolo practice or play for them this month. "He's scheduled to count $26.9 million against the 2022 salary cap with a $24.2 million base salary," Nick Wagoner of ESPN said. "None of that money is guaranteed, however. But Garoppolo's salary could become guaranteed if he were to get injured again." 

It's assumed would-be buyers believe the 49ers will release Garoppolo if no trade materializes before final cuts must be made on Aug. 30. Lynch didn't sound like an executive ready to make such a decision on the second day of the month. 

"We'll stay patient through this one as well and come to a great conclusion for everybody involved," Lynch added about Garoppolo's situation. 

For now, Lynch and company continue to wait to see if a different starting signal-caller suffers an injury during training camp or the preseason and leaves his employer in need of a fill-in such as Garoppolo.
