The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are just days away from their much anticipated Week 1 matchup that will kick off their 2023 NFL seasons. Of course, the matchup not only means the return of regular season football, but it is also the beginning of the Jordan Love era in Green Bay.
Of course, the Packers-Bears rivalry has been pretty one-sided for the majority of the last 30 years. Brett Favre had a career record of 23-13 against the Bears (though that total also includes the games he played against them as quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings) and Aaron Rodgers is 24-5 against them.
The past, though, is the past, and previous success does not guarantee future domination. For Love and the Packers, they have aspirations beyond beating a team that finished the 2022 season 3-14. They want to win their division and return to the postseason.
All of that, though, begins in Week 1, and Green Bay has been notoriously awful in Week 1 games as of late. To ensure success on Sunday, the Packers’ new starting quarterback has one goal: be consistent.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Knows Success Is Found In Being Consistent
After the Packers’ final preseason game, Love was asked about what his targeted area of improvement was for his first regular season game as the primary starting quarterback. He answered:
“Consistency. Just being consistent for myself and this offense as a whole. When we get the opportunity to make big plays, we’ve got to make them. It just comes down to consistency every day in practice, and it’s going to translate to the games.
“I think that’s going to be the test this season, but I mean right now going into it I’m confident in the offense. I think when we get to be consistent, hitting on all our big plays, I think we’re going to be tough to stop.”
Being consistent is certainly an important goal. One hopes that finding that consistency will allow Green Bay to score on more opening drives, something that Love failed to lead the offense to in any of his preseason appearances.
That being said, Love consistently was not rattled by mistakes (his or those of others) and led scoring drives in each of his preseason starts.
What will help is the reliable offensive line and backfield that Love has at his disposal. Long said to be the strengths of the offense, Love and the passing game can find consistency if they allow Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon to be the running tandem they were in 2021.
Of course, health would go a long way to help consistency as well. With Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson both questionable with hamstring injuries, the offense is going to be tested early.
Being consistent with his throws and his reads, especially if his top two wide receivers are not able to play, will be vital.
