Will Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels finally get his second chance as NFL head coach with the Eagles? Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Josh McDaniels reportedly favorite to become Eagles head coach

Josh McDaniels has emerged as the favorite to become the next head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, though several other candidates are still believed to be in the mix, including Buccaneers DC Todd Bowles.

The Eagles are one of only two teams left that have not filled their head-coaching vacancy, with the other being the Houston Texans. McDaniels, who is currently the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, interviewed with the Eagles for several hours over the weekend and seemed to impress owner Jeff Lurie.

McDaniels was previously a head coach for the Denver Broncos before returning to the Patriots when he was fired after just two seasons. He almost became a head coach again in 2018 when he agreed to be the coach for the Indianapolis Colts. However, McDaniels eventually backed out and decided to stick with the Patriots instead. Now, he could become a head coach once again in Philadelphia.

But McDaniels is no guarantee for the job, as the Eagles have interviewed several other candidates for the head-coaching position, including Bowles, Panthers OC Joe Brady and several others.

Doug Pederson was fired by Philadelphia after a disappointing season that saw the Eagles finish last in the NFC East, which was widely considered the weakest division in the NFL. A big part of the divide between the Eagles and Pederson was reportedly the future of Carson Wentz, as the organization still believed the young quarterback's career could be salvaged, while Pederson wanted to move forward with Jalen Hurts as the starter.
