The Kansas City Chiefs had a lot of big individual performances in Super Bowl LVIII, but one that may have gone under the radar was that of defensive lineman Mike Pennel.

The Chiefs signed Pennel to their practice squad back in October. The 2023 season was his second stint with the team after playing in Kansas City from 2019-2020. Pennel appeared in just three games during the regular season, making a minimal impact.

During the postseason the Chiefs had to place starting defensive linemen Derrick Nnadi and Charles Omenihu on injured reserve, thrusting Pennel into a starting role. With everything on the line in the biggest game of the year, Pennel came up big for K.C.

Pennel recorded six total tackles in the Super Bowl, two solo and one for a loss. He clogged up running lanes all night long against a very good San Fransisco 49ers rushing attack. The 10-year veteran did the little things that made a difference, such as staying disciplined and playing with good technique. For his efforts, Pennel was given the NFL Way To Play Award, an honor that recognizes great excellent playing technique.

The award is given out by NFL Play Football, a program that provides football camps and activities for youth. Pennel certainly provided an excellent example of technique and knowing his role during the Super Bowl. His effort against perennial All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams and 2023 Offensive Player of the Year running back Christian McCaffrey went a long way in K.C. securing its second-straight Super Bowl title.
