The Los Angeles Chargers may have won their Week 8 game on Sunday, but that did nothing to help Ken Whisenhunt’s job status.

The Chargers on Monday fired Whisenhunt, who had been the team’s offensive coordinator since 2016.

The Chargers are only 3-5 this season and scored 17 points in a road win at Chicago. The team has not scored more than 20 points in any of its last four games. The lack of success in the rushing game has been an even larger concern, as the team has not rushed for more than 40 yards in any one of those games.

The struggles for the team’s rushing game coincide with the return of Melvin Gordon from his holdout, which has seemed to hurt the team more than help it.

Whisenhunt, 57, had two runs as a head coach prior to being with the Chargers. He was fired after going 3-20 in two years for Tennessee from 2014-2015. He was 45-51 over six seasons as the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach, taking them to the Super Bowl in the 2008 season.

The Chargers rank 23rd in points per game this season.
