Keyshawn Johnson: Patriots QB Mac Jones 'looked like bad macaroni and cheese' during preseason

By many accounts, New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones endured a preseason to forget following the departure of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who left the organization to become head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders this past winter.

Per Fox Sports, Jones completed 13-of-21 pass attempts for 132 yards with no touchdowns and an interception during August exhibition games. Following Friday's preseason finale against none other than the Raiders that the Patriots lost 23-6, Chad Graff of The Athletic wrote that "there’s reason to believe (Jones) isn’t fully prepared for Year 2."

Former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson offered harsher criticism of the 23-year-old signal-caller during Monday's edition of ESPN's "Keyshawn, JWill & Max" program.

"Mac Jones this preseason, to me, looked like bad macaroni and cheese with breadcrumbs on top," Johnson remarked, per Jaclyn Hendricks of the New York Post. "For whatever reason, and I don’t know if it’s Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, or it’s just the offensive line, or it’s the playcalling or he’s not seeing it clean, but he looks like a guy that belongs in the fourth round [as] opposed to the guy that we saw last year, help his team, at times, get into the playoffs. He look like a totally different dude this preseason, I don’t know what it is. Like I said, he look like a bad pan of macaroni and cheese."

Patricia and Judge are teaming up to serve as McDaniels' replacement and underwhelmed many during what are largely meaningless August warmup games. As noted by ESPN stats, Jones finished his debut pro season 15th among eligible quarterbacks with a 92.5 passer rating and 16th with a 50.9 total QBR. He completed 67.6% of his passes for 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Jones and company will attempt to look more appetizing when they open the regular season at the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 11.
