Kyle Shanahan: 49ers don't expect Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle back 'any time soon'

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the timetable on the returns of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and tight end George Kittle, saying the two will "not [be back] any time soon."

Kittle has been out since Week 8 when he broke a bone in his foot during the 49ers' loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Many assumed that Kittle would be out for the rest of the season, but the tight end has expressed confidence that he will be able to return this year. However, Shanahan's statement seems to indicate that the All-Pro may not return to the field in 2020.

As for Garoppolo, he has dealt with an ankle injury all season, only playing in six games this season. The 29-year-old quarterback has also been out since Week 8 but did not have to undergo surgery, so there was hope that he would be able to play again this season. Nick Mullens has been starting in Garoppolo's place but has struggled, with the 49ers going 2-4 over Mullens' six starts.

The 49ers are trying to stay in the playoff race despite experiencing a plethora of injuries but are on the outside looking in. They currently sit in fourth place in the NFC West standings with a 5-7 record. San Francisco may struggle to save its season without Garoppolo and Kittle, as the offense has become a shell of itself over the last several weeks.

San Francisco is scheduled to play the Washington Football Team this Sunday and hopes to get its season back on track after losing four of the last five games.
