Lions' Dan Campbell, Chiefs' Travis Kelce against new fair catch rule

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce are among NFL personalities against the league's new fair catch rule.

"Highly frustrating, it's very frustrating. But, look, I don't make the rules," Campbell said, per Christian Booher of FanNation's All Lions. "That's a new rule, and we'll live by the new rule. We'll find a way to adjust, adapt and still get what we want. I hate that we continue to take away from the game, that's what really worries me. If we're not careful, it won't replenish at one point. But, listen, it's the rules. We'll make do, and we'll adjust."

Earlier this week, the NFL approved a rule allowing kick returners to call for a fair catch anywhere inside their teams' 25-yard line to have the ball placed at the 25. Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid previously made it known they opposed the suggestion, and Lou DiPietro of Audacy noted Campbell reportedly was part of a "coach pushback" against the rule.

"I think this is absolutely stupid," Kelce said of the rule during his "New Heights" podcast, according to Joe Morgan of Fox News. "I don’t think it is making the game safer. I think it’s making it more boring and taking a lot of excitement out of the game’s opening play. This is whack."

Per Morgan, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell insisted that "the data is very clear about the higher rate of injury" on kickoffs and that the new rule will help prevent concussions during games. However, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported on Thursday that "some who oppose the latest change...believe the league is deliberately fudging the numbers in order to support the change that was made."

Theoretically, the NFL could eliminate the new rule as soon as next offseason. Judging by Goodell's comments, that seems unlikely regardless of how many coaches and players speak out leading up to Super Bowl LVIII.
