Lions hope meteoric rise continues, giving HC and GM contract extensions

Following a remarkable turnaround, the Detroit Lions are placing more confidence in head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes.

On Thursday, the franchise announced that Holmes and Campbell agreed to contract extensions that keep them in Detroit through the 2027 season.

"We are thrilled to have Brad and Dan under contract for the next four seasons," owner Sheila Hamp said, per the team website. "They have been the driving force behind the rebuild of our football team and the success that we have enjoyed. The continuity they provide for our football program will continue to be the key to our future success on the field."

Detroit hired Campbell and Holmes in 2021. Their first season inspired little confidence as the Lions went 3-13-1. Since then, however, they've emerged as a championship contender.

In 2023, Detroit went 12-5, snapping a 30-year division title drought. The Lions also made the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991, where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31.

Despite the defeat, Lions fans should feel optimistic about the future. Holmes has assembled an excellent roster that features stars such as wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, running back Jahmry Gibbs and offensive tackle Penei Sewell.

The Lions might be on the verge of winning their first Super Bowl. As of Thursday, FanDuel places them within its top 10 Super Bowl LIX odds. Retaining the duo that made this possible is the right move for the franchise.
