Lions inexplicably giving new deal to DC Aaron Glenn

In a head-scratching move by the Detroit Lions, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has been offered and is expected to sign a multiyear contract extension, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

In 2022, Detroit's defense gave up 392.4 yards per game, more than any other team. The Lions gave up 25.1 points per game, the third worst in the NFL. In 2021, the defense gave up 27.5 points and 379.8 yards per game – both figures in the league's bottom five.

Some may argue Glenn has had little to work with in his two years in Detroit, but he hasn't done much with schemes to put the team in a better position.

The defense showed signs of life last season after a 1-6 start and the firing of defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant.

Aidan Hutchinson finished second in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting after a slow start. Once Glenn moved him around on the line and stood him up in some situations, Hutchinson justified his selection as the No. 2 overall pick.

A new deal likely isn’t needed to prevent Glenn from going to another team for a similar position. Such lateral moves are rare, Eric Bieniemy's recent deal aside

Per mlive.com, Glenn -- a former NFL defensive back -- interviewed for a head-coaching position this offseason.

If the defense improves significantly in 2023, he could land a top job. If it struggles again, the Lions (9-8 in 2022) could cut bait after three disappointing seasons.

Bottom line: There doesn't seem to be many rewards for giving the leader of one of the league’s worst defenses a new deal.
