Lions promote TEs coach Ben Johnson to OC position

Despite finishing with the NFL's second-worst record in 2021 at 3-13-1, the Detroit Lions have plenty of talent on their roster, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Among the weapons at quarterback Jared Goff's disposal this past season were dynamic running back D'Andre Swift, breakout rookie wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and 2020 Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson.

For the 2022 campaign, Detroit will have a new, yet familiar face leading the offense from the sideline.

Johnson joined the Lions in 2019 as their offensive quality control coach, before serving as the team's tight ends coach the last two seasons. After playing quarterback for the University of North Carolina from 2004 to 2007, Johnson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Boston College in 2009 and 2010.

The former Tar Heel signal-caller was the Eagles' tight end coach in 2011 and jumped to the NFL in 2012 as an offensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins. Johnson stayed with Miami through 2018, holding the roles of assistant quarterbacks coach (2013 to 2015), tight ends coach (2015), assistant wide receivers coach (2016 to 2017) and wide receivers coach (2018).
