The Detroit Lions were the talk of the football world after their Week 1 upset victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football in the season opener. A 21-20 win over the defending Super Bowl champions was quite a momentum builder to begin the season with.
Unfortunately, that positive momentum being built was stopped in its tracks in Week 2. The Lions hosted the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener but lost 37-31 in overtime. Their defense once again looks to be the Achilles heel as Seattle gained 393 yards of total net offense in the game. Most of that came through the air, with 311 net passing yards.
The Lions offense was on fire as well, gaining 418 total yards. Their attack was more balanced than the Seahawks, as they gained 102 yards on the ground. Unfortunately, their game plan in the backfield is going to have to be adjusted.
Running back David Montgomery suffered a thigh injury in Week 2 and is expected to miss a few weeks. That is what he told reporters after the game, but he would not comment further on the injury.
It is believed that Montgomery suffered the injury around the three-minute mark of the third quarter. He made a reception and was tackled by Seahawks’ linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who dragged him to the ground. “It looks like a thigh bruise. I’ll know more [Monday],” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said after the game.
Montgomery has been solid for the Lions through his first two games with the team, carrying the ball 37 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs were expected to be a strong one-two punch for this offense, with Montgomery being the early down back and Gibbs mixing in as a versatile weapon.
Many fans have been wanting to see more of Gibbs in the Lions’ offense and they could be getting their wish. He should take over as the team’s unquestioned leadback as long as Montogmery is sidelined. Craig Reynolds will also factor into the mix.
