Lions' rookie Aidan Hutchinson reached unique NFL mark in win over Giants
When the Detroit Lions selected Aidan Hutchinson second overall out of Michigan in April's NFL Draft, they knew they were adding a potential franchise-building piece to their defense. And through his first ten professional games, Hutchinson hasn't disappointed.
During the second quarter of Sunday's 31-18 win over the New York Giants, Hutchinson picked off quarterback Daniel Jones, registering his second-career interception to reach an NFL mark accomplished by only one other player.
According to the Lions' football communications department, Hutchinson is only the second player to post five sacks and two interceptions through the first ten games of their career. Hutchinson joins six-time Pro Bowler Leslie O'Neal, who finished his rookie season with 12.5 sacks and two interceptions in 1986.
Hutchinson also tied the NFL record for interceptions by a rookie defensive lineman.
Lions' head coach Dan Campbell called Hutchinson's pick a "heck of a play," adding that he was "exactly where he needed to be" to come away with the turnover.
Earlier this week, Campbell discussed Hutchinson's mentality with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
"He wants to be a difference-maker," Campbell said. "Like he views himself as somebody like, 'I can change the game. Like I can do that.' And so I think when you get in those critical moments, those high-pressure situations, he's somebody that thrives."
