We’re now hearing more about the Detroit Lions’ reasoning for waiving young cornerback Alex Brown over the weekend.

The South Carolina State product played a ton in Detroit preseason opener Friday evening against the Buffalo Bills. That’s why the decision to waive Brown seemed to be untimely.

Now, according to multiple media reports, Brown was involved in an accident early Saturday morning in Detroit in which he was allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol. The details of said allegations are about as troubling as it gets.

Brown was “intoxicated and driving at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of the freeway,” local prosecutors in Detroit noted. The defensive back has been charged with two counts of operating while under the influence causing serious injury and two counts of reckless driving causing serious injury on Monday.

Detroit Lions tight end Charlie Taumoepeau injured in accident

Taumoepeau suffered serious injuries in the accident and was almost immediately waived with a non-football injury designation. He’ll likely end up back on the Lions’ non-football injury list. Media reports indicate that Taumoepeau had to removed from the vehicle with jaws of life and suffered multiple broken ribs.

“We are aware of the situation from Sunday morning involving Alex Brown,” the Lions said in a statement to Rogers. “Alex was waived from the team Sunday afternoon and Charlie Taumoepeau is receiving proper medical care following injuries sustained from the incident,” the Detroit Lions said in a statement. “Driving under the influence is a matter we take very seriously. We, as an organization, extend our thoughts and support to the victim and his family during his recovery.”

As for Brown, he appeared in three games for the Detroit Lions back in 2019. The small-school product was battling for a roster spot before this incident occurred. He’ll be arraigned on Tuesday.
