Los Angeles Chargers general manager, Joe Hortiz spoke with the media recently and gave some insights into his thought process around cornerback depth. Since the team has added, Kristian Fulton in free agency but that doesn’t mean they are done adding to the position group.

“We’re always shopping for corners,” Hortiz said, adding, “We’ll sign corners, we’ll draft corners and we’ll always be looking for corners. That’s a position you never stop chasing.”

Los Angeles Chargers Current CB Depth

The Charger’s cornerback depth is scant even with the addition of Fulton. Asante Samuel played the most snaps of any defender who is returning, as well as, Ja’sir Taylor (46% of defensive snaps) and Deane Leonard (19%). They lost Michael Davis (77%) and Essang Bassey (19%).

However, Hortiz does recognize the potential of the players currently on the roster.

“It’s an important position and I feel good about the guys that are here. I think Asante is good pro. He’s been in a starting role. I feel good about Ja’Sir and Deane, I think they’re going to take steps this year.

“And what I do feel great about are our coaches. They’re going to do a great job of developing our young guys.”

Cornerback Plan Moving Forward

Adding Fulton alleviates the dire need to add to the position in the draft. His philosophy also means they are keeping an eye on the remaining free agents. There are still several high-end options available; Xavien Howard, Adoree Jackson, and Stephon Gilmore are still free agents. As well as solid budget options, Rock Ya-Sin, Levi Wallace, and Ahkello Witherspoon.

The Los Angeles Chargers have over $30 million in cap space to work with, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they add a cornerback after the draft.
