According to reports , the Los Angeles Chargers are re-signing safety, Alohi Gilman. Gilman was one of the few bright spots on the Chargers defense last season. He intercepted two passes and defended seven more. He is also credited for three forced fumbles. The former sixth-rounder had the fifth-best PFF grade in coverage among safeties. He was also a bear against the run, he was second behind Derwin James in tackles on the team.

Gilman’s contract was bigger than expected, a two-year, $11 million deal averaging. That’s just $1 million over expected. In addition to that, the safety market was flooded with high-end talent. Even in that the Chargers wanted to ensure they retained him and signed him early.

Of course, this will tack on a few extra million to the Chargers salary cap overage. The Chargers also added RB Gus Edwards and TE Will Dissly. All three add approximately $8 million combined to the $21.1 million they already owe.
