Is there a chair for one more "name'' guy in the QB room?
Zach Wilson, the 2021 NFL Draft bust from the New York Jets' first round, is being shopped. A few days ago, his L.A. connection helped it all make sense: the Rams' Mike LaFleur was his offensive coordinator for a time in New York.
Does it still make sense? Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated is pushing the idea that Wilson would be able to sit for an entire year while learning from the two veteran quarterbacks.
We would say two things in favor of the idea ...
1 - It is generally speaking a fine idea to throw multiple darts at the QB position. If somehow the Rams can unearth Wilson's talent? It's a gold mine.
2 - The Rams have had success zigging when others zag.
What do we mean by that one? That takes us to the two things that make the idea a dubious one ...
1 - While Stafford is obviously the No. 1 guy ... and without indicting Jimmy G. or Wilson ... that's a lot of (probably) ego to stuff into one room.
2 - Can Wilson play? Obviously, he hasn't lived up to his No. 2 overall selection billing. In his Jets time, he threw 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions and went just 12-21 as a starter. Obviously, that wasn't all his fault. But he was a deer-in-the-headlights in New York as he looked the part physically ... until it was actually time to accomplish something.
Coach Sean McVay has earned the benefit of the doubt here. And we suspect Breer is doing something more than just "guessing.'' But L.A. needs to pour all of its time into helping Stafford win. "Rehabbing images''? Not just Wilson, but Garoppolo, too, probably need to do that on their own time.
