According to a report from TMZ, Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler was charged with drunk driving in Rhode Island earlier this month. The former New England Patriots cornerback was arrested following a traffic stop by the North Providence Police Department on March 16.

The report indicates Butler was pulled over around 3:22 AM. He displayed signs of driving drunk at the traffic stop. Butler’s white Mercedes-Benz was blocking traffic in a travel lane according to police documents. Butler said he had not been drinking and was coming from a studio where he had been making music. However, police reported a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes, and reported Butler was “sweating profusely in the face.”

Butler refused to perform field sobriety tests. The North Providence (R.I.) PD booked him on a charge of DUI. His court on the matter is scheduled for later this week, according to TMZ’s reporting.

Apple TV’s “The Dynasty” focused most of Episode 9 of the series on Malcolm Butler not playing in New England’s Super Bowl 52 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But Patriots fans will also remember Butler most for his game-winning interception against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 49. It is arguably the greatest play in NFL history.

Malcolm Butler officially announced his retirement from the NFL on March 9, one week before the incident. Butler also retired temporarily back in 2021. However, Butler has not played in the NFL since 2020. He signed with the New England Patriots for a second stint in 2022 but was injured before the season began. Butler ended up playing in 112 career games, including the postseason. He intercepted 19 passes, won two Super Bowls, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2015.
