The Houston Texans' defensive line has improved throughout training camp and preseason. Will Anderson Jr. and Sheldon Rankins have made an immediate impact as off-season acquisitions. But the Texans' decision to reunite with Jacob Martin has been just as beneficial.
During Saturday's preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins, Martin started over Jonathan Greenard and Jerry Hughes while appearing in 18 snaps.
Martin's start in a Week 2 preseason game is not an indication that the 27-year-old defensive lineman has won a starting job. But the decision is a testament on how the Texans are heavily considering adding Martin to their 53-man roster. The NFL's cutdown day is set for Aug. 29.
"Jacob has done a good job in practice — he’s been consistent in practice," coach DeMeco Ryans said. "He’s shown that ability to set the edge, to rush the passers, so I’m encouraged with some of the things that Jacob has done in practice, and he went out there first in the game."
Martin rejoined the Texans after his release from the Denver Broncos in March. He played half the 2022 campaign with the Broncos following a trade from the New York Jets on Nov. 1, while registering a combined 2.5 sacks in 13 games.
Between his time with the Jets and Broncos, Martin described last season as the "business of the NFL." But despite his long journey, Martin is grateful for his second stint in Houston.
He has embodied Ryans' SWARM defensive mentality and caused disruption on Houston's offensive line during training camp.
"That’s what preseason is all about," Ryans said. "There are no starters — nothing to set. It’s about us seeing what our team can actually look like, in giving guys multiple looks, multiple opportunities."
Martin's first stint with the Texans came ahead of the 2019 season. The Seattle Seahawks included him in the trade package to acquire defensive end Jadeveon Clowney from the Texans.
In three seasons in Houston, Martin tallied 10.5 sacks and 54 total tackles. He became a reliable EDGE rusher for former defensive coordinators Romeo Crennel (2019), Anthony Weaver (2020) and Lovie Smith (2021). Martin is looking forward to reiterating his production under Ryans in 2023.
"I am grateful for this organization and the player it has made me," Martin said. "I am excited to come back. I am excited to see the changes that have been made. It feels like I've been away for a while, but it has only been a season."
