Denver Broncos (4-5) rookie receiver Marvin Mims was subject to some heckles from the crowd at Highmark Stadium Monday night following his zero-catch performance in the 24-22 victory over the Buffalo Bills (5-5).
Mims logged a zero on the box score despite receiving a season-high 69% of the offensive snaps against Buffalo, which one Bills fan made sure to point out.
“You’re locked up. Nothing. Zero catches,” the fan hollered at Mims.
Mims was well aware of his underwhelming night, but appeared to shift blame elsewhere.
“He don’t throw it to me anyway,” Mims said in reference to quarterback Russell Wilson.
When Mims has gotten the ball this season, he’s been one of the most explosive wideouts in the NFL. Mims has turned his 15 targets into 11 receptions for 246 yards and a touchdown, averaging 22.4 yards per catch. He’s also been proficient on special teams, averaging 33.6 yards on seven kick returns, and 20.7 yards on nine punt returns.
But in recent weeks, he’s often been a no-show in Denver’s offense. In the last four games, Mims has been targeted just three times, hauling in one reception for zero yards. In total, the second-round pick out of Oklahoma ranks seventh on the Broncos in targets. He trails receivers Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy, tight end Adam Trautman and the running back trio of Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine and Jaleel McLaughlin.
Marvin Mims remains uninvolved in Broncos’ offense
While Mims may have been uninvolved in the offense, Monday’s game was still a great night for the Broncos. Denver notched another statement win in their first year under Sean Payton, after taking down the Kansas City Chiefs before the bye week. The Broncos have now won three straight games and are in the thick of things in the AFC playoff picture.
While the numbers won’t show it — 24-of-29 for 193 yards and two touchdowns — Wilson looked closer to the player who routinely made trips to the Pro Bowl during his time with the Seattle Seahawks. The 34-year-old expertly guided the Broncos on multiple scoring drives in the fourth quarter, a welcome sight for what the rest of the season holds.
“We’re going to celebrate,” Wilson said after the game. “We’re going to have some fun. This is a huge one. This is a good football team we just played. Obviously, the past couple weeks we’ve been playing some really good teams. To beat the Chiefs, to beat these guys, [that] sets the standard of who we should be and who we can be and who we’re going to be.”
