It has been over 5,800 days since the Green Bay Packers have had a kicker not named Mason Crosby on their roster, and it looks like his time in Green Bay has come to an unceremonious end.
Drafted as the third kicker in the 2007 NFL Draft, Mason Crosby has been the longest-tenured member of the Green Bay Packers roster ever since Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets. With plenty of game-winning moments from the former Colorado Buffalo, Crosby’s time in Titletown quickly cemented him as the best kicker in franchise history.
From 2007-22, Crosby broke numerous records, both for kickers and for points, ending his time in Green Bay with 1,918 career points, 395 made field goals, and 733 successful extra points. Crosby currently sits as the 53-most accurate kicker of all time with an 81.443 field goal percentage.
Clutch Gene
Crosby is no stranger to clutch moments, as he was the reason Green Bay won plenty of games across his 16-year career.
In Crosby’s first game of both his NFL career and of the 2007 season, he helped the Packers beat the Philadelphia Eagles at home with a game-winning 42-yard FG. In 2011, Crosby’s 30-yard field goal helped Green Bay go to 12-0 with a road win over the Giants.
2016 produced two game-winners for Crosby, including one that is still talked about today. His Week 15 road winner over the Bears helped Green Bay inch closer to the playoffs, but his 51-yard FG to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round (after the infamous Aaron Rodgers – Jared Cook connection) is one he will always be remembered for.
In his final season, Crosby had two game-winning made field goals – his first in Week 4 over the New England Patriots, and his second (and final one) in Week 10 to defeat Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys. There are few kickers that showed up more regularly than Crosby when the lights were the brightest, and he often made sure that the Packers were going home winners.
While no concrete announcement has been made about Crosby’s future in Green Bay, Mason’s wife, Molly, announced on Twitter that Mason’s 16-year run with the Packers has ended. It doesn’t seem as though there are any hard feelings about the situation, but plenty is currently unknown at this time.
Green Bay drafted Auburn kicker, Anders Carlson, the brother of Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson, in the 2023 NFL Draft, a big signal that there would be a changing of the guard at kicker.
With this looking like the end of the line for Crosby and his time in Green Bay (and potentially in the NFL), there is an easy way to showcase our appreciation.
