The Detroit Lions are eager to get a crack at the Super Bowl, thanks to the championship window Dan Campbell opened for them. However, they need talented players to complete their roster and compete with the NFC’s best teams.

One of the Lion’s early off-season moves to have a better chance at winning a Super Bowl is to sign one of the most talented Canadian defensive linemen who aren’t plying their trade in the NFL.

Mathieu Betts hopes to bag a permanent contract with the Detroit Lions

Mathieu Betts isn’t someone who would ring bells among NFL fans, however, some Chicago Bears fans who religiously follow what happens with the team may have a clue on who he is and what he can bring to an NFL team.

Betts is a defensive end who once tried out to the big leagues by joining the Bears’ practice squad. However, he couldn’t crack into the 53-man roster and plied his trade in the Canadian Football League. In his most recent CFL season with the B.C. Lions, the defensive lineman managed to set a league-leading 18 sacks.

While the Lions did sign him to a contract, his spot on the 53-man roster is not secure until he makes it to the start of the season. However, 3DownNation’s John Hodge reports that the 28-year-old is confident of sticking the landing when it comes to an NFL spot:

“I’m excited for the opportunity to be able to compete and to try to make that roster and I feel like I have a really good chance of doing it,” Betts told the media via videoconference on Wednesday. “Especially in the NFL, that’s the roster we were the most confident that I could that crack. It was the first workout that I had this off-season and the chemistry, the energy, the discussions I’ve had with the staff there just felt right.”

If Betts shows the drive and talent that Dan Campbell wants in his players, it won’t be strange to see him with the Detroit Lions once the 2024 season comes around.
