Matthew Stafford texted Jared Goff to offer best wishes in Detroit

Detriot Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and Los Angeles Rams signal-caller Jared Goff will exchange teams once the trade between the franchises becomes official at the start of the new NFL year next month.

According to SI.com, Stafford spoke with WJR Radio on Monday and said that he reached out to his to-be replacement.

"Shot him a text. We texted a little bit. Just told him that I'm now going out there (to Los Angeles). I got big shoes to fill," Stafford explained during the interview. "It's not lost on me that he was in the Super Bowl just a few years ago. He's a really good player in his own right. I just wanted to let him know that I appreciate him as a player and obviously, to reach out to me if there was anything he needed when it comes to Detroit -- just as far as advice or places to stay, anything. I know that he feels that he can reach out to me, and I know I can reach out to him with anything in Los Angeles."

While Stafford will enter training camp as the Rams' starter, new Detroit coach Dan Campbell could make Goff compete for the gig, either with a proven veteran or a first-round draft pick. Back on Feb. 7, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. predicted the Lions will use the seventh overall selection to acquire Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields.

Last week, Lions offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn told reporters he would prefer to sit a rookie quarterback if possible.
