Michigan director of player personnel Tom Gamble is going back to the NFL. According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gamble is headed to work in the front office of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the same team he worked for prior to joining the Wolverines staff in 2022.
Gamble helped Michigan to a national title this past season in what was his second stint in Ann Arbor. He also served as a senior adviser to coach Jim Harbaugh from 2017-19.
Tom Gamble has more than 30 years of NFL experience and will now go back to where he has spent the vast majority of his career. He earned his first scouting role with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988 and later went on to work for the Panthers, Ravens and Colts.
Gamble later went on to work for the San Francisco 49ers from 2005-12, spending two seasons with Harbaugh in 2011 and 2012. He helped lead the team to the Super Bowl during his final in 2012, where it lost to the Ravens.
Gamble then rejoined the Eagles as the vice president of player personnel and remained until 2014. He returned to San Francisco in 2015 and was promoted to assistant general manager for the 2016 season before rejoining Harbaugh in Michigan.
Interestingly enough, Gamble’s playing background comes not in football, but baseball. He attended High Point University and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2020.
Of course, Gamble isn’t the only member of Michigan’s national title-winning staff to leave this offseason. Harbaugh notably returned to the NFL as well to take over as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. He brought with him defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert, and his son Jay, the special teams coordinator for the Wolverines.
Sherrone Moore is set to take over for Harbaugh and lead Michigan’s defense of a championship in 2024. He spent the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator and even acted as interim head coach for a few games when Harbaugh was suspended this past season.
Michigan is set to wrap up spring practice this week with its annual Maize vs. Blue spring game on Saturday. After that, the Wolverines will have about five more months to prepare for the regular season, which kicks off on Aug. 31 against Fresno State.
