Mike McCarthy on future as Cowboys HC: 'I don't have any concerns'

Sunday's NFC wild-card game between the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers had everything. It featured penalties galore, a near monumental comeback and a very controversial finish. In the end, the Niners became the first team of the weekend to pull off a road victory, as they hung on by a final score of 23-17.

With the win, No. 6 San Francisco advances to face the top-seeded Green Bay Packers next weekend in the NFC Divisional round.

Due to how the game finished, and the questionable play call that the Cowboys drew up with just 14 seconds remaining in the contest, many on social media were immediately calling for Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy to be fired. The 58-year-old was asked how he felt about his job security following the loss.

McCarthy's first year as an NFL head coach was in 2006 with the Green Bay Packers. The team won Super Bowl XLV against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011 under McCarthy and he stayed with the organization until he was fired after Week 13 during the 2018 campaign following a 4-7-1 start.

McCarthy had multiple interviews for NFL head-coaching gigs in the offseason going into 2019, but ended up sitting out the season. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native was announced as the Cowboys head coach in January 2020.

The team went 6-10 last season, losing starting quarterback Dak Prescott to a season-ending ankle injury in Week 5. Dallas finished the 2021 regular season 12-5 and champions of the NFC East before falling to San Francisco.
