With a team that sits 1-7 at the midpoint of the season, there are several disappointments to speak of.

But none ring louder than running back Miles Sanders, who, against the Indianapolis Colts, claimed six carries for 39 yards in a 27-13 Carolina Panthers loss.

Sanders signed with the Panthers on a four-year, $25.4 million contract. He was coming off a career year in Philadelphia, where he rushed for 1,000-plus yards. His versatility as both a runner and pass-catcher was believed to complement rookie quarterback Bryce Young. None of that has happened, and he remains the biggest disappointment of the 2023 season thus far.

Sanders has an unceremonious 69 carries for 229 yards and one touchdown. He currently has more fumbles than scores through eight games.

And the final nail in the coffin was running back Chuba Hubbard, who came into the year as a backup, usurping Sanders as the every-down downhill runner.

Sanders isn't helping the debate that running backs should be paid handsomely following their rookie deal. His play is proof for most running backs -- the second long-term contract is nothing but a disaster.

That isn't to say Sanders couldn't save his season. There is still time left. But one has to think the Panthers are looking for the quickest way out of a four-year deal -- eight games in -- has already handcuffed the franchise.
