Mitchell Trubisky on Steelers QB competition: 'Coach Tomlin is very transparent about the situation'

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has seemingly made former Chicago Bears starter and Buffalo Bills backup Mitchell Trubisky the man to beat in the quarterback competition also involving first-round draft selection Kenny Pickett and career backup Mason Rudolph.

Trubisky has been atop the depth chart since he signed with the Steelers in March and before the club spent a first-round choice on Pickett, and NBC Sports' Peter King noted in his latest "Football Morning in America" piece that the starting gig is the 27-year-old's "to lose." Trubisky told King that Tomlin hasn't been secretive about his intentions regarding the sport's most important position over the past several months.

"Coach Tomlin is very transparent about the situation," Trubisky explained. "Ever since I got here, it’s been really impressive to me how he leads the team as a football coach. He’ll even tell you. It’s not an accident that he gets the results he does because he’s such a great leader. I’m just trying to soak in all that knowledge so I can be the best player I can be and we can continue to go out and win games for the Steelers."

Tomlin was sure to add that "we’re at the very early stages of this" and also stated that "everyone’s gonna get an opportunity to show their capabilities, for sure." Pittsburgh opens the preseason versus the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 13, and it's widely assumed Trubisky will be Tomlin's QB1 for at least the first offensive drive of that game.
