While not a flashy signing, Steelers nose tackle Montravius Adams is back on a two-year deal also. Adams recently appeared on the Gaelic Gridiron podcast, and he believes with the added additions, the sky’s the limit for the Steelers defense this season.
He also touched on why he wants to finish his career as a Steeler.
“Honestly, as a kid, I always thought I would play up to 10 years,” Adams said. “This year will be the start of Year 8, and I could definitely see myself finishing out at Pittsburgh. They helped rejuvenate my career in a couple of ways. This is a place where I’ll lay it all out on the line at and finish out right here.”
Adams was a solid nose tackle for the team a year ago, starting the season and then backing up Keeanu Benton for the rest of the season after he left with injury against the Tennessee Titans.
Adams registered 15 pressures, and after the loss of Armon Watts to the New England Patriots, Adams should be seen for a significant consideration to play more. Over his career, Adams has become a reliable player with an explosive first step and someone who always has his motor running hot. Pittsburgh will now return six of their top seven players on the defensive line but could look to add more to that room.
Adams came over to the Steelers in 2021 after they signed him off the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Adams credited Tomlin for convincing him to come to Pittsburgh.
“Honestly, I was kind of in a space where like all these NFL teams [were] the same,” Adams said. “It is what is, I’ll just stay right here in New Orleans. But my man Coach T and them gave me a call and as you can see, it went great. It’s just him being a player’s coach, being for the people.’
Adams is a veteran who has played with Green Bay, New England, New Orleans, and now finds himself having an extended stay in Pittsburgh. He came out of Auburn in the 2017 NFL Draft and was drafted in the third round by the Packers. Adams has often talked about the Steelers organization’s family atmosphere and why he has wanted to stick around within the organization.
He joins Isaiahh Loudermilk, DeMarvin Leal, and Breiden Fehoko as depth players. It’s a position that sometimes helped the team but registered the 19th-best run defense in the NFL. So, it certainly could be an area they upgrade either in free agency once again or in the 2024 NFL Draft.
