The Falcons began offseason training activities today in Flowery Branch, but there were a couple of notable players missing. Atlanta’s head coach Raheem Morris said Kirk Cousins was not at the opening day of the voluntary activities.
Cousins surprised a lot of people when he showed up earlier in the offseason for voluntary workouts, which is the only reason I can come up with for the outrage from some Falcons fans and media for why he’s not here now.
I mean, John Fricke, who is one of the longest-standing radio voices in Atlanta sports, tweeted, “Broke Down Liar too petty to even show. Pathetic.” What the hell are we even doing?
Cousins showed up earlier in the offseason to probably put pressure on the Falcons, or he was genuinely trying to put his best foot forward and be a good teammate. So what changed?
The Falcons might have told him to stay home to avoid being a distraction. He could just be staying home as the two sides work on a potential trade with the Steelers as Aaron Rodgers sulks in limbo. Or perhaps none of the above are true, and Cousins is just not attending VOLUNTARY workouts.
Generally speaking, there’s never some big story with these sorts of things, but that’s not fun for fans. Kirk Cousins, however, wasn’t the only notable Falcons player missing. Per Terrin Waack, Kyle Pitts was another player not in attendance.
I actually think if fans wanted to make one of these missing Falcons a big deal, it should be Kyle Pitts, not Kirk Cousins. Pitts has a lot to prove in 2025. The best case for Cousins is that he’s traded; it’s Michael Penix Jr.’s team. Pitts, on the other hand, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has not had a “successful” season since his first year.
Kirk Cousins isn’t playing for anything this year because he might not even play this year. Pitts, meanwhile, is playing for a second contract, whether it’s with the Falcons or another team.
Even still, these guys being absent at this point in the offseason shouldn’t mean a whole lot.
