We weren't looking for it, but we found it anyway. The worst Tennessee Titans take of the offseason has been discovered and it won't be topped.
Nick Wright, the host of First Things First on Fox Sports, randomly suggested this week that the Titans will have the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The comment happened when one of Wright's co-hosts said the Titans are "going for it" in 2024, a notion that Wright scoffed at.
"Oh I think the Titans might end up with the No. 1 pick," said Wright.
When Wright was pressed on why he thinks the Titans will be the worst team in the NFL, all he could offer was "because I think they're poorly run".
Wright then laughed at the idea that the Titans will be competitive in 2024.
There are bad takes and then there are absurdly bad takes that are so terrible that they have to be satire.
Unfortunately, I don't think Wright was going for satire -- I think he just has no clue what he's talking about. I mean, I'm not even sure this guy has looked at the internet since free agency started earlier this month.
No one is predicting that the Titans are a dark horse to win the Super Bowl or anything like that (though they certainly could be). But the idea that Tennessee hasn't improved this offseason is absolutely ludicrous.
Titans general manager Ran Carthon has put on a masterclass on how to improve a roster this offseason. He landed one of the top wide receivers in free agency in Calvin Ridley (and who cares about the contract...the Titans had the cap space...there is no such thing as overpaying in the NFL...you make the moves you think you gotta make to win games). Carthon also added a talented running back to the roster in Tony Pollard to pair with Tyjae Spears. And he brought in a solid center in Lloyd Cushenberry (who, by the way, should fit perfectly into Brian Callahan's LSU-inspired offense...Cushenberry was Joe Burrow's center in Baton Rouge).
Oh, and Carthon traded a third round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, one of the top defensive players available via trade/free agency (the Titans subsequently signed Sneed to an extension, too).
The Titans went 6-11 last season, but they weren't as "bad" as their record indicated. Seven of the Titans' losses were by eight points or less. And five of their losses were by four points or less. It's not like they were getting blown out in every loss.
A new coach who can breathe life into the franchise with a new offensive philosophy combined with one of the best offseasons in the NFL should have the Titans in the playoff conversation. The idea that this greatly improved roster is going to somehow be worse in 2024 is simply absurd.
