New Rams QB Jimmy Garoppolo explains what led to his suspension

New Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be serving a two-game suspension when the 2024 NFL season begins for violating the league's performance enhancing substance policy.

On Tuesday, he attempted to explain what happened that resulted in the suspension. It was because he "messed up" getting an exemption on a prescribed medication, per ESPN's Sarah Bishop.

Garoppolo spent the 2023 season playing for the Las Vegas Raiders, entering the season as their starting quarterback and their hopeful replacement for Derek Carr. He signed a three-year, $72 million deal with the team. Unfortunately for him and the Raiders, it never actually worked out as anybody planned, and he found himself benched in favor of rookie Aidan O'Connell.

He was released after the season and landed back on the free-agent market. He ended up signing a one-year contract with the Rams in free agency.

When he is able to return from his suspension, he will give the Rams a reliable backup to play behind veteran starter Matthew Stafford. The Rams did not have that last season, and given Stafford's age and recent injury history, it was certainly a risk to not have a capable backup behind him.

Garoppolo is not a star by any means, but he has had a lot of success in the NFL and can certainly win games with a talented roster around him if called upon.
