The New Orleans Saints didn’t have to look far in hiring their new head coach.

After a lengthy tenure by Sean Payton, the franchise elevated former defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to assume Payton’s position.

That approach ensures continuity regarding the team’s game plan as they start another campaign.

The Saints didn’t have to change much because they barely missed last season’s playoffs at 9-8.

That record is still a positive sign, considering that they lost quarterback Jameis Winston to a season-ending injury and All-Pro wideout Michael Thomas did not play at all.

In 2022, both players will be back for the Saints and they’ve brought in some reinforcements.

New Orleans selected Chris Olave in the first round of this year’s draft and signed Jarvis Landry to a one-year contract.

But the changes might not stop there after Drew Brees left his role as NBC Sports’ analyst after a season.

Brees commented that he’s currently undecided regarding the next phase of his life.

He added that he might return to NBC, coach his kids, focus on business, or play professional football again.

If that last part is true, Saints fans will loudly cheer for his return, if he decided to don the team’s uniform again.

However, Allen sees Brees’ statement in a different light by saying, “I think the comment was made in jest.”

No Return To The Field For Brees

Allen should know Brees better because they’ve spent a lot of time together.

Even if Allen didn’t directly coach the future Hall of Famer, it’s certain that they still had some conversations during practices and team functions.

Therefore, the Saints’ current head coach should have an idea on how Brees thinks.

Likewise, Brees’ last game was an indication that it was time for him to hang his cleats for good.

Being out of game shape for a year doesn’t guarantee a successful return, if he did play again at age 43.
