The New York Giants are expected by many to select a quarterback in next week’s NFL Draft.

However, where they select the quarterback may end up surprising some people.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic surmises that the Giants may actually pursue a signal-caller with their second-round draft pick at No. 47. Duggan offered this suggestion after Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported that New York was hosting Oregon’s Bo Nix and South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler for visits.

New York owns the No. 6 overall selection, but the Giants may opt to roll with a wide receiver or even an offensive tackle at that spot. Some have mocked LSU wide out Malik Nabers to New York, and others have proposed that New York could select Notre Dame tackle Joe Olt.

While teams like the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders and New England Patriots are all expected to take quarterbacks in the first round, the Giants intentions seem less clear.

New York currently has Daniel Jones under center, and last year, Big Blue signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million extension. The catch is that only the first two years of Jones’ deal are guaranteed, so the Giants can part ways with him after next season.

It seems hard to imagine that Jones’ presence would prevent New York from selecting a signal-caller, but it’s entirely possible that the Giants would prefer to add a legitimate weapon or another significant piece with the sixth pick and then take a quarterback later in what is a very deep quarterback draft.

Nix, for example, threw 45 touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 77.4 percent of his passes in 2023, and yet, he is considered by most to be the fifth or sixth-best quarterback prospect in this year’s class, depending on who you ask.

If New York can land someone like Nabers at No. 6 and then manage to snare Nix in the second round, it would be a pretty big coup for the Giants.

Of course, whether or not Nix would actually be available at No. 47 is up for debate. New York may have to trade up to make that scenario come to fruition.
