The New York Giants have some major needs heading into the 2024 NFL offseason. Depending on who you ask, you would get different answers on what the most pressing need is facing general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.
In the opinion of many people, it is the quarterback position that needs to be figured out. They have said Daniel Jones will be the starter when he is healthy, but that is certainly a risky decision.
Jones was terrible in 2023 after signing a four-year, $160 million contract last offseason. The offensive line production and lack of a true No. 1 receiver didn’t help, but watching Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito execute the offense effectively with basically the same supporting cast certainly raised some eyebrows.
Armed with the No. 6 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Giants are likely out of the running for a top quarterback based on mock drafts. More often than not, the top three picks are all quarterbacks, which puts New York in a tough spot.
They can reach for a quarterback, but that is what has them in this position with Jones. Addressing another need is certainly on the table, as there are several excellent wide receiver prospects that will be on the board.
But, in a recent mock draft done by Chad Reuter of NFL.com, he has the Giants going in a different direction. With the No. 6 pick, Reuter has mocked Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse to Big Blue.
“Will Anderson Jr.’s production dropped in his final year at Alabama (34.5 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks to 17 and 10) but he proved his combination of power and speed was NFL-ready. I expect to see the same from Verse, who was no less of a problem for offensive lines in 2023 than he was in the previous season, even if his numbers were slightly less impressive in ‘23 (17 TFL, 9 sacks in ‘22; 12.5 and 9 in ‘23),” Reuter wrote.
The Giants do need help when it comes to their pass rush, as Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari weren’t highly-graded players. Teams can never have too many pass rushers, but this is a selection that would likely disappoint many fans.
The offense needs an overhaul, whether it is a new quarterback for the future or a bonafide No. 1 receiver. With every wide receiver still on the board other than Marvin Harrison Jr. in this mock, passing on them will be seen as a bad decision by the fan base.
