The New York Giants are looking for roster depth ahead of training camp in just a few days. According to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, the Giants were tinkering with things over the weekend, releasing offensive tackle Korey Cunningham, who played 12 games last year for Big Blue.

Cunningham has spent four years in the NFL, playing 113 offensive snaps last year, allowing two sacks and seven total pressures at right tackle. However, the Giants clearly didn’t see him as a long-term debt solution, especially after signing Matt Gono from the Atlanta Falcons to help shape the back end.

To replace his roster spot, the Giants brought in safety Gavin Heslop, a former Stony Brook player at the collegiate level. At 24 years old, Heslop was undrafted, spending the 2020 season on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad.

Heslop has minimal experience on defense but could serve as a decent special teams player. He spent 30 snaps last year on Seattle’s special teams unit before breaking two bones in his leg on December 12.

The Giants have a long way before they are considered a competent team, so you can never have enough depth pieces that serve a specific purpose.

While most are hyperfocused on the big names acquired this off-season like Evan Neal, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and even Mark Glowinski, the majority of any given team is built out by depth players.
