The New York Jets filled another need today as the Aaron Rodgers trade saga continues. While both sides seemingly have re-engaged, the Jets will need to protect whomever they have behind center next season. The team has re-signed center Connor McGovern who has been a key piece of their offensive line for the past three seasons.
New York Jets Re-Sign Connor McGovern
McGovern just completed a three-year, $27 million contract and was a free agent. While McGovern has had his struggles, his most important asset is durability. He played every offensive snap in 2022 and has only missed three games in the past six seasons overall. Continuity is one of the most important parts of an offensive line. The group must work together as a unit so having the same five guys usually results in better line play. The terms of the deal are not immediately available but chances are it is very team-friendly as we are late in free agency.
The Stage Is Set For Rodgers
Everything is in place. Center was a huge need for the team. Offensive tackle is as well but many analysts have the Jets taking one with their first-round pick. This is most likely why the Jets are wanting to hang onto the pick rather than deal it for Rodgers. Signing McGovern means they do not also have to find a replacement center in the draft. Having two rookies on the line would be risky for a team that is trying to win now. The roster is set to bring in Rodgers. Now they just need to close that deal.
The New York Jets re-signing Connor McGovern goes a long way to helping them compete in the AFC. The conference is tough even with an improved roster. New York will need all the help they can get to win a Super Bowl next year.
