The Chicago Bears will have Justin Fields as their presumptive starter for Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season.
The team thinks that it’s the right time to give the full-time role to the second-year play-caller.
After all, they traded up with the New York Giants in the 2021 draft to get him.
Therefore, it’s no use to ride him on the bench again, especially with Andy Dalton and Nick Foles gone.
Besides, the Bears would rather have him under center than either Trevor Siemian or Nathan Peterman.
It remains to be seen if the Bears made the right decision in choosing Fields.
Meanwhile, there’s no turning back for the franchise and they must live with the results.
The Bears will have a leader to build around if he turns out to be a Pro Bowl player.
In contrast, his failure adds to their whiffs at the position that dates back to after Jim McMahon.
Worst yet, the NFL on CBS Twitter account reminds the Bears of their futility at the game’s most important position.
They revealed that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has 13 four-touchdown games since he became the team’s full-time starter in 2018.
Meanwhile, Bears quarterbacks over last 50 years have a combined ten.
Chicago’s Woes At Quarterback Continues
That comparison is a sideswipe to the Bears who could have taken Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Instead, they took Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick.
On the other hand, the Chiefs traded up to get Mahomes at number ten, and the rest is history.
Kansas City won a Super Bowl with Mahomes while the Bears are still struggling to compete.
Trubisky isn’t a part of the Bears and he looks to have another shot at being a starter with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
On the flip side, Mahomes signed a ten-year, $450 million deal with the Chiefs, making them contenders for a long time.
The Bears hope that Fields will break the disappointing trend that has plagued them for decades.
