The New York Giants made a bold move with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by selecting Malik Nabers. However, many thought they should take JJ McCarthy.

McCarthy saw his NFL dreams come to fruition when the Minnesota Vikings selected him with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

While McCarthy’s impressive college career, including a national championship, has garnered praise from many, ESPN analyst and former Super Bowl champion Ryan Clark holds a different perspective.

During a segment on Get Up, when asked whether the Vikings getting McCarthy at No. 10 was a steal and if the New York Giants erred in not selecting him, Clark didn’t mince words.

“No…J.J. McCarthy was drafted where J.J. McCarthy should have been drafted…They (New York Giants) have touched this fire before…That’s why they’re sitting where they are now.”

Clark’s critique echoes the Giants’ decision to draft Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick in 2019, a move driven by necessity rather than strategic foresight, which has left the organization struggling.

Despite Jones’ tenure, the Giants have only managed one playoff appearance in five seasons. Now, as McCarthy transitions to the NFL with the Vikings, the spotlight intensifies on his potential.

For the first time in his football career, JJ McCarthy finds himself surrounded by a talented ensemble of skill players. The likes of wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, tight end T.J. Hockenson, and newly-acquired running back Aaron Jones form a formidable offensive lineup.

In contrast, McCarthy’s experience in Ann Arbor lacked such robust offensive support, save for a standout running back in Blake Corum.

As McCarthy embarks on this new chapter, the question looms: Can he forge strong connections with his elite teammates? The answer remains uncertain, but the outcome could significantly impact Minnesota’s fortunes moving forward.
