NFL analyst reveals only QB who can 'take the throne from Patrick Mahomes'

Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL, and it'd be hard to argue otherwise following the 2022 season. However, one NFL analyst believes there is one player who could dethrone Mahomes this season.

"I think the only person who can take the throne from Patrick Mahomes is actually Lamar Jackson," Fox Sports analyst Emmanuel Acho said. "Lamar Jackson has already proven himself to be a unanimous league MVP, even something Mahomes hasn't done. So at least with Lamar Jackson, there's some built in equity."

Mahomes is already a two-time Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP and league MVP (2018, 2022) while Jackson has just one league MVP (2019) and has yet to make it past the Divisional round of the playoffs.

Jackson has also never thrown for more than 3,127 yards while Mahomes has two 5,000+ passing yard seasons.

Acho isn't naive in the fact that it would take by far his best season yet for an argument to be made for Jackson, but he thinks it is possible.

"He would still be shy a Super Bowl and a Super Bowl MVP, even if Lamar has a dream season, but at least an argument could be had," Acho added.

The Ravens have certainly given Jackson the best supporting cast he's had since entering the NFL and he has already hinted at his lofty aspirations for 2023, saying he wants to "throw for 6,000" yards.

If Jackson reaches his goal, there'd absolutely be an argument for him. But it's never been done, so Jackson will probably need more than just the 2023 season to officially dethrone Mahomes if he ever does.
