NFL analyst rips Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for Trey Lance trade

You can count former NFL offensive lineman and current analyst Mark Schlereth as one person who is not a fan of the Dallas Cowboys' decision to trade for quarterback Trey Lance.

Schlereth went nuclear on the organization, and owner Jerry Jones specifically, during his recent Stinkin' Truth podcast for not only making the deal, but for the manner in which it was made.

Jones reportedly made the trade himself while not consulting head coach Mike McCarthy or the team's current starting quarterback, Dak Prescott. Schlereth had a big — emphasis on big — problem with that.

The former OL said this was just another example as to why the Cowboys never win: It's because Jones simply can not help himself from getting involved in the construction of the roster.

Then he really got rolling.

"I said it, it’s there. You think about Jerry Jones. You’re gonna go out there, and you’re gonna make a trade for a guy without talking to anybody else in your organization? Stephen Jones? Your head coach, Mike McCarthy? Your quarterback?” Schlereth said. “Listen, I don’t really care if you involve your quarterback or not. But to not involve your head coach? What does it say about your head coach?

“‘Hey guys, I know he’s your head coach. But he truly has no authority in this organization, so you don’t have to listen to him. You don’t have to pay attention because the buck stops with me. Your coach doesn’t have the authority to fire you, I do.'”

He concluded his rant by saying he is sure the Cowboys will win a bunch of regular-season games, but once they get in the playoffs they will "s--- in their helmets like they do every year."

How is that for a visual?

The Cowboys acquired Lance from the San Francisco 49ers this past week in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick after he lost out on the backup job to Sam Darnold.

It was a move that earned the 49ers and general manager John Lynch an immense amount of criticism for the way they handled Lance, as well as the trade they made to acquire him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Given what San Francisco gave up, how little production it got out of Lance and how bad the return was on the trade, it might already go down as one of the worst trades in modern NFL history.

Now the Cowboys are also facing some heat for it.

There is nothing wrong with the Cowboys rolling the dice on Lance, but Schlereth is correct that it creates a lot of unintended problems for the organization, from McCarthy not having any control over things to Prescott potentially using Lance's presence as a way of trying to get more money on a contract.
