NFL CB Pierre Desir donates 10,000 meals to Houston Food Bank

Veteran NFL cornerback Pierre Desir was the subject of humorous headlines ahead of Christmas when the New York Jets named the 30-year-old their nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award even though he and the franchise had parted ways.

Desir's legitimate contributions are no laughing matter.

As ESPN's Jamison Hensley and other outlets reported, Desir donated 10,000 meals to the Houston Food Bank after extreme winter weather conditions left tens of thousands of Texas residents without power and hot water for days. Desir's agent said that the defensive back believed "it was the right thing to do" even though the player has zero ties to the Houston area.

Desir surrendered completions on 74.5% of the passes thrown his way during his brief stint with the Jets that ended when the club waived him on Nov. 17. He found a home with the Baltimore Ravens, however, and was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for the playoff game versus the Buffalo Bills. Desir is set to become a free agent but should receive interest from teams when the new NFL year opens on March 17.

Desir is a two-time nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award who has recorded eight career interceptions since entering the league via the 2014 NFL Draft.
