NFL 'could have sold three million tickets' to Bucs vs. Seahawks in Germany

Earlier this week, the NFL said it was "overwhelmed" by the demand for tickets for a November game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks in Munich, Germany. On Thursday, the head of NFL's operations in Germany revealed the staggering amount of interest.

"We were able to anticipate it a bit in advance due to the approximately 600,000 registrations for the presale in the past weeks," the NFL's Alexander Steinforth told German outlet Ren, as translated by SB Nation. "At the peak, however, there were about 800,000 people in the virtual queue at the same time.

"Ticketmaster told us afterwards that they could have sold around three million tickets. This level of demand — whether for sporting events or concerts — is usually only seen at the Super Bowl. So, this advance sale for the NFL's Germany has once again exceeded all expectations."

The game will held in Allianz Stadium, home of FC Bayern Munich, and will hold 75,024 fans for the first-ever regular season NFL game in Germany. The league has previously held regular season games in London and Mexico City.

When the NFL announced in February that Munich would be host to a 2022 regular season game, commissioner Roger Goodell also revealed that Frankfurt would host two games in later years.

Germany was the home to five teams — the Berlin Thunder, Cologne Centurions, Frankfurt Galaxy, Hamburg Sea Devils, and Rhein Fire — in NFL Europe, which existed between 1991 and 2007.
